Four-year-old Luca’s face lit up with sheer joy when she was thrown a surprise Taylor Swift party at the hospital, a moment of happiness amidst the months of pain and uncertainty she had been enduring. Luca, described by her mother Jodi as a ‘vibrant spark of life,’ has always been full of energy, imaginative, and determined. She loves dressing up her dolls, telling magical stories, and creating worlds through play. But her carefree childhood was shattered when she suffered a severe eye injury caused by chemical burns, resulting in vision loss.
“It happened so quickly,” says Jodi, reflecting on the traumatic event. “One minute, Luca was playing, and the next, she was rushed to the emergency room.” What followed was weeks of painful surgeries, treatments, and tests as doctors worked tirelessly to save Luca’s sight. She underwent urgent procedures, including a general anaesthetic to flush out her eye and surgery to assess the damage. Amniotic membrane grafts were performed on her eye to aid healing, but it was just the beginning of a long, challenging road.
The trauma of the treatments was not only physical but emotional as well. The daily routine of eye drops to prevent infection and reduce inflammation became a constant reminder of the pain Luca had to endure. “The eye drops give Luca nightmares,” Jodi shares. “Each time she has to go through it, she’s reminded of the discomfort and fear. It’s heartbreaking to see something so simple become a source of dread for her.”
Amid the constant pain and fear, Starlight stepped in as a vital source of joy and support. Jodi describes Starlight’s presence in the hospital as a “game-changer” for Luca. “Being in hospital was so isolating and scary for Luca, but Starlight helped bring a little light into that darkness. It was like a burst of pure joy in the middle of all the fear and uncertainty.”
On days when she felt well enough, Luca looked forward to the Starlight Express Room—her safe space to sing and dance to her favorite songs with Captain Starlight. “It was a place where she could be a kid again,” Jodi recalls. Luca loved playing Bingo, doing arts and crafts, and even enjoyed the surprise Taylor Swift dance party that the Captains organized for her. “Starlight gave Luca something to smile about at a time when happiness seemed so far away,” Jodi adds. “Those moments helped keep her spirits high and reminded her that, even in the hospital, there could still be fun.”
The journey has not been easy, and life remains challenging for Luca. She has to avoid sunlight and can no longer go outside to play freely like she used to. The family has adapted their routines, planning social activities for early mornings or late evenings to minimize exposure to sunlight. Luca continues to undergo regular appointments with the burns and ophthalmology teams at the hospital to manage the long-lasting skin damage around her eyes, and her scars serve as a constant reminder of her struggles.
However, Luca is slowly but surely regaining her sight. “It’s a long road ahead,” Jodi says, “but each time she can see a little more clearly, it’s a victory we cherish, and it brings us hope.” Despite the ongoing challenges, Luca’s creativity and imagination continue to shine, thanks to the support she receives from Starlight.
