Fighting With Every Beat: Joseph’s Powerful Journey as a True Heart Warrior. h

When Stephanie went for her 20-week scan, she never imagined the life-changing news she would receive. The sonographer needed a senior colleague to review her baby’s heart, and then came the words that would shake her world:

“There’s something wrong with his heart.”

Within hours, Stephanie and her partner were meeting specialists who diagnosed their unborn son, Joseph, with multiple complex heart defects: transposition of the great arteries (TGA), ventricular septal defect (VSD), and coarctation of the aorta (CoA).

They were told he would need urgent surgery after birth — but the full extent of his condition would only become clear later.

A Difficult Start

Joseph was born via emergency C-section and immediately transferred to the NICU due to being very unwell. Stephanie didn’t meet her son until the next day. “The moment I held him, my heart was full,” she recalls.

At just three days old, Joseph had his first cuddles, but the reality of his condition was never far away. Scans revealed his heart was even more complex than first thought, including

atrial septal defect (ASD), hypoplastic aortic arch (HAA), and deformed coronary arteries. Surgery would be high-risk, with a long and uncertain recovery ahead.

The First Surgery

At just a few days old, Joseph went into surgery. Thirteen hours later, the team reported complications — another hole was discovered, requiring him to go back on bypass. Post-surgery, Joseph was critically unwell and needed

ECMO support in PICU.

Stephanie describes walking into the PICU as terrifying: “Seeing my baby connected to machines, chest open — it’s a fear like no other. We were completely helpless, just hoping for a miracle.”

A Rollercoaster Recovery

Joseph’s first months were a blur of emergency surgeries, catheter procedures, infections, multi-organ issues, and more. Within 11 days, he underwent two additional open-heart operations. He faced

chylothorax, endocarditis, failed extubations, and weeks of intensive care.

Despite all, Joseph fought with an extraordinary courage that amazed his doctors and gave his parents hope through the darkest days.

After four months in the hospital, Joseph was finally discharged — a milestone of triumph and relief for his family.

Life at Home and Continuing Challenges

Even at home, Joseph’s journey continued. He faced multiple infections, required a

PEG and NG feeding, and experienced abnormal liver function at one point. He was diagnosed with a cow’s milk protein allergy and endured several hospital admissions. Yet, through every setback, he persisted.

Stephanie recalls: “Every challenge made us more in awe of our little boy. He’s a fighter — always has been.”

Today: Thriving Despite the Odds

Now, Joseph is stable, starting school, walking, talking, and showing his cheerful, cheeky personality. While he has a

developmental delay, his parents are proud of every step, every word, and every milestone.

Joseph’s resilience and determination are a testament to his spirit. Stephanie reflects: “I know Joseph will achieve everything he dreams of. He’s an inspiration.”

Support Makes a Difference

Stephanie credits Tiny Tickers with helping her understand Joseph’s complex conditions, including his additional diagnoses of bradycardia and atrial ectopy. The parent community provided reassurance, guidance, and emotional support throughout their journey.

“Being part of Tiny Tickers has been invaluable,” Stephanie says. “It reminds you that you’re not alone — and that support can make all the difference.”

A Story of Courage, Hope, and Love

Joseph’s journey is one of struggle, resilience, and triumph. From the shocking diagnosis in the womb, through multiple high-risk surgeries and life-threatening complications, to the joyful, determined little boy he is today, Joseph proves that even the smallest hearts can hold extraordinary strength.

His story is a reminder of the importance of awareness, early detection, and trusting your instincts. Most importantly, it’s a testament to the power of love, hope, and unwavering family support in facing the impossible.
