Animal experts say this is more than just a cute moment. Elephants are smart enough to learn from watching us, and they often copy behavior that seems useful or rewarding.
Studies have shown elephants can learn new tricks simply by observing their keepers. One famous case from a Berlin zoo describes an elephant that figured out how to peel bananas after watching humans do it over and over.
Elephants also show signs of problem solving, memory and even empathy. They use tools, comfort each other when stressed and can remember places and people for many years.
