Ilyas was born on 25th June 2025, a beautiful, tiny miracle whose arrival brought hope and love to his family. But from the very beginning, Ilyas’s life has been far from ordinary. He was born with a rare congenital heart defect known as Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome—commonly called “half a heart.” The left side of his heart is severely underdeveloped, meaning that Ilyas faces a lifetime of medical challenges and will require three open-heart surgeries before he turns five, with a fourth major surgery planned for when he is 3–4 years old.

Since the day he was born, Ilyas has been admitted to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Starship Hospital. At nearly five months old, he has spent 152 days in the hospital, each one a battle that tests his strength, resilience, and determination. His first Norwood surgery took place when he was just six days old, followed by an unexpected revision of the Norwood at one month old, and his third Glenn surgery at four months. Each procedure has been monumental, a step toward giving him a chance to grow and thrive despite the fragility of his condition.
The journey has been filled with highs and lows. There are moments of joy, like seeing Ilyas smile or respond curiously to his surroundings, and moments of fear, when unexpected complications threaten his fragile health. Most recently, fluid had built up around his lungs, requiring drains on both sides of his abdomen to relieve the pressure. He experienced drops in oxygen levels, prompting a cardiac CT and heart catheterization. The catheter revealed that blood flow to his left lung was blocked, and the vessels connecting that lung to the heart were extremely small—meaning he was essentially breathing with only one lung.
The medical team intervened with a balloon to expand the vessels, and since then, Ilyas’s vital signs have improved. But his parents know this condition is unpredictable, and the issue may recur. Every day is a delicate balance, and Ilyas remains incredibly sensitive to noise, touch, and changes in his environment. Even in the face of such challenges, he continues to show his spirit, giving smiles and interacting with the world around him, reminding his family why every struggle is worth it.
For his parents, every day is a mix of hope and worry. They take each moment as it comes, cherishing every smile, every small milestone, and every breath. They describe Ilyas as a warrior—tiny yet incredibly strong, fighting every day just to be with them. Watching their son navigate these challenges has given them the strength and faith to fight alongside him, and the determination to be present for every step of his journey.
The journey has also taken a toll on the family beyond the emotional strain. Ilyas’s parents have used up all their work leave and still require additional time off to be with him and care for their two other children, a 1-year-old and a 6-year-old. The financial burden is significant, with hospital stays, medications, specialized equipment, and the day-to-day expenses of life adding pressure to an already stressful situation. Any support, financial or otherwise, helps this family focus on what matters most: Ilyas’s care, comfort, and the precious moments they share together.
Despite all the hardships, Ilyas continues to show his personality and curiosity. He responds to voices, watches what everyone is doing, and even manages to smile through the toughest days. Moments like dressing him in clothes—rare because of the need to monitor his breathing, excessive sweating, and numerous IV lines—become treasured memories for the family. Each of these small glimpses of normalcy is a reminder of his resilience and the love that surrounds him.
Ilyas’s story is one of extraordinary courage, not only on his part but also for his family. Every surgery, procedure, and hospital stay represents a chapter in a journey defined by determination, hope, and unwavering love. His parents remain grateful for the support of friends, family, and the wider community, whose prayers, messages, and generosity provide comfort and strength during these difficult times.
As the family continues this journey, they focus on giving Ilyas every opportunity to be comfortable, to grow, and to experience the life he deserves. Each day in the hospital is a testament to his courage and the commitment of the medical team caring for him. Through every challenge, Ilyas shows that even the smallest hearts can carry incredible strength, resilience, and love.
Ilyas’s journey may be long and uncertain, but with his family’s devotion, the support of his medical team, and the kindness of the community, he has every chance to thrive. Every smile, every small milestone, and every act of love reminds the family why they fight so fiercely for this tiny warrior, who is proving every day that even with “half a heart,” a child can show boundless courage, strength, and the will to live fully.
