Deep in Thailand’s Kui Buri National Park, a three-month-old calf became separated from its herd during a midnight rainstorm, its terrified cries echoing unanswered through the darkness.
Rangers on patrol found the shivering baby alone near a riverbank at 2 a.m., weak and covered in mud, while kilometres away the mother’s agonised trumpets shook the entire herd, refusing to move until her child was found.
For five desperate hours, the rescue team carried the exhausted calf on foot through thick jungle, guided only by the mother’s continuous roars of grief.
As dawn broke, they released the baby in a clearing; the instant the mother caught her calf’s scent on the wind, she charged forward, ears flared and trunk outstretched.
The reunion lasted thirty unforgettable seconds: the mother wrapped her trunk tightly around the trembling calf, lifting it gently off the ground while both shook with overwhelming relief.
