Beau Hubbard — turning 4 weeks old this Thursday — was born with an extremely rare and severe heart defect.

Meghan writes:
“Before birth, doctors knew Beau’s heart wasn’t forming properly and he would need open-heart surgery right after delivery. We moved closer to the hospital so he could get immediate care.
“When Beau was born, he wasn’t breathing and had to be resuscitated immediately. Doctors quickly realized his heart anatomy was far more complex than expected — something never seen before at Texas Children’s.
“Because his heart was sending too much blood to his lungs, Beau was at constant risk of lung damage. He also didn’t get enough oxygen before and during birth, causing brain swelling. He was cooled for 72 hours, but miraculously suffered no brain damage.
“Due to his critical condition, Beau was airlifted from Austin to Houston.
“Doctors said Beau will need three major heart surgeries:
- The first (already done) to control blood flow to the lungs and prevent further damage.
- The second to address smaller vessels as they grow.
- The final one to fully repair his heart defect.
“We’ve been told Houston will be our home for at least the next 6 months or longer while Beau grows and undergoes his surgeries.”
