In the first three hours of his life, while being transported by helicopter from his birth hospital to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Oliver coded. For the medical team, this was an unprecedented emergency—his was the first helicopter transport in 20 years from his birth hospital. His mother recalls the experience as a complete shock, both to the medical team and to herself. The situation was dire, and no one knew what to expect next.
Oliver’s early days were filled with uncertainty. He spent a staggering 99 days in the NICU, enduring 16 surgeries, including life-saving procedures such as ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation), dialysis, and even suffering a stroke. His family lived each day minute by minute, unsure of what the next would bring. It was a time marked by fear and uncertainty, but throughout it all, Oliver’s fighting spirit never wavered. Today, Oliver is a thriving 6-year-old who has overcome unimaginable hurdles. His medical journey is far from over, and he continues to be seen regularly by his Urology and Nephrology care teams. Hospital visits, procedures, and medications are now part of the rhythm of his family’s life, but despite the complexities of his health history, Oliver is not defined by his conditions. He is your typical, energetic child, full of curiosity and a zest for life. He plays baseball, something that once seemed impossible, and he excels at reading and math.

At just 6 years old, he self-administers his treatments, showing a level of maturity and responsibility that most children his age wouldn’t be capable of.
