Tadzio, our beloved son, came into the world on October 20, 2018, as an extremely premature baby at just 27 weeks gestation. From his very first breath, life demanded courage from him, and courage he showed in abundance. His fight for survival lasted 62 grueling days in the hospital, days filled with uncertainty, alarms, and countless interventions. When we finally brought him home, exhausted but alive, our hearts swelled with relief and joy. We believed the worst was behind us, but fate had another battle in store for our little warrior.
On January 12, 2021, Tadzio and I went for a routine abdominal ultrasound. Given his prematurity, we had been vigilant with his check-ups, but nothing could have prepared us for what we were about to learn. The ultrasound revealed a 6-centimeter tumor in his abdomen. The news hit us like a thunderbolt. The happiness we had carried for so long turned to fear and disbelief. After further testing, the devastating diagnosis was confirmed: adrenal ganglioma, a grade 3 neuroblastoma with MYC amplification, already metastasized to regional lymph nodes. At just two years old, Tadzio was facing a battle for his life — again.
The first cycle of chemotherapy has been completed, and Tadzio has shown resilience far beyond his years. But the road ahead is long, challenging, and fraught with uncertainty. He still requires seven more cycles of chemotherapy, a complex surgical procedure to remove the tumor, an autotransplant to rebuild his immune system, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy. Each step is critical, each step is a fight, and each step carries both hope and risk.
This is Tadzio’s second battle for survival, and it has transformed our lives completely. Until now, both parents worked to provide for our family. Since learning of Tadzio’s diagnosis, I have had to dedicate myself entirely to his care. Being by his side through treatments, appointments, and the difficult moments of recovery is now a full-time commitment. Every hour, every day, we witness the strength and courage of our little boy, and we want to ensure he has everything he needs to continue his fight.
Neuroblastoma is an aggressive and unpredictable cancer, especially in children as young as Tadzio. The treatments he needs are life-saving, but they are also intensive, expensive, and require constant support from his family. Travel costs to specialized hospitals, medical fees, medications, and the various therapies needed during and after treatment quickly become overwhelming. Yet Tadzio faces every challenge with the innocence and determination only a child can possess. Every small smile, every laugh, every brave step he takes is a testament to his extraordinary spirit.
