Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital. There, doctors discovered something no parent is ever prepared for: Finnlee had a congenital heart defect (CHD) called D-TGA — transposition of the great arteries.
For most parents, the first few days of their baby’s life are filled with joy and wonder. But for Finnlee’s family, those early days were nothing short of terrifying. D-TGA is a rare heart condition in which the two main arteries that carry blood out of the heart are switched, causing oxygen-poor blood to circulate throughout the body instead of oxygen-rich blood. It was a battle for Finnlee’s tiny body to fight, and the stakes were higher than anyone could have imagined..
Finnlee was quickly transferred to the cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU), where doctors worked tirelessly to stabilize him. His condition was critical, and it was unclear what the future would hold. But despite the odds stacked against him, Finnlee showed a strength that far surpassed his tiny frame. After undergoing a procedure to help ease his breathing, he was given the chance to prepare for the major heart surgery he needed just a week later.
His parents, who had already gone through so much in those first 10 days, held on to each other tightly, refusing to give in to the fear that threatened to overwhelm them. They knew their baby boy was a fighter. As they looked into his eyes, they saw a strength and determination that made them believe, even in the darkest moments, that Finnlee could overcome anything.
One week later, Finnlee underwent the heart surgery that would give him a chance at life. The road to recovery was long, and there were many moments when it seemed like the fight was too much. But Finnlee, like the warrior he is, kept fighting. His tiny heart, fragile but full of life, pumped with hope, and soon he began to improve.
Today, at 16 months old, Finnlee is thriving. He’s stronger every day, and with each passing milestone, his family is reminded of the miraculous power of love, perseverance, and hope. From the fragile infant who couldn’t breathe on his own, Finnlee has blossomed into a happy, playful little boy who is determined to show the world that no obstacle is too big to overcome.
