Aria Kean, born on October 21, 2021, brought joy to her parents, Becky Flower, 34, and Damien Stephens, 43, from the moment she arrived. However, within days, her parents noticed her skin turning yellow, a sign of jaundice that would mark the beginning of a life filled with hospital visits, complex surgeries, and uncertainty. Initially, Becky and Damien believed it was a common newborn issue, but as weeks passed, it became clear that their daughter was fighting a rare and serious condition.
At seven weeks old, after several trips to Camborne Redruth Community Hospital and further tests at Royal Cornwall Hospital, Aria was diagnosed with biliary atresia, a rare disease affecting the bile ducts and liver. Doctors explained that without treatment, the bile ducts could block bile flow, damaging the liver and impacting Aria’s growth and overall health. To try and restore bile flow, she underwent a Kasai procedure at just eight weeks old, a surgery that connects the liver directly to the intestine, giving the organ a chance to function properly.

For a few months, the procedure seemed to work, and Aria showed signs of improvement. Yet, her progress was fragile, and doctors warned her parents that she would likely need a liver transplant eventually. The couple had barely begun to breathe easier when further complications emerged, including a hole in her heart that required immediate attention. Just three days after their June 2022 wedding, Aria was rushed back into hospital, and specialists at King’s College Hospital in London determined that she would need both open heart surgery and a future liver transplant.
On July 27, 2022, Aria underwent a four-hour open heart operation to close the hole between the two chambers of her heart. Becky and Damien waited anxiously as surgeons worked to stabilize their tiny daughter. When the call came confirming the surgery had been successful, relief washed over the family, but they knew the fight was far from over. Aria’s heart was repaired, yet her liver remained weak, and she would continue to need ongoing monitoring and eventual transplantation to secure her long-term health.

Throughout this ordeal, Aria has displayed remarkable resilience and a bright, smiling demeanor that her parents describe as inspiring. Becky said, “She is so little, but she has been so strong and brave to get through this. Even through all the hospital stays and procedures, she smiles and shows her spirit.” Her parents have had to adapt their lives completely, with Becky providing full-time care and Damien supporting her while managing work commitments. The emotional and physical demands of caring for Aria have been enormous, yet the couple remain focused on her recovery and wellbeing.
Because of Aria’s age and condition, doctors have told the family that the liver transplant could drastically improve her health, energy, and growth milestones. Joe explained, “The transplant will change everything for Aria. Her body has been slower to grow and develop because of her liver, and once she receives a new liver, she will instantly gain energy, color, and strength. It will be like a different baby.” The family hopes that once the transplant is complete, Aria will reach milestones that have been delayed, including teething, feeding, and gaining weight more efficiently.

Knowing the urgency of her condition, Aria’s father has volunteered to become a living liver donor if an emergency arises before a suitable match is found from the donor registry. Joe said, “If she needs it, I can give part of my liver. Knowing that I am compatible gives us reassurance that we can save her if the situation becomes critical. She is our baby girl, and of course we would do it in a heartbeat.” This selfless preparation provides the family with an additional layer of hope as they wait for a suitable donor liver.
To support the family through hospital stays, travel, and the ongoing care Aria requires, friends and relatives have launched a GoFundMe page. Becky said, “We can’t wait for the day we can take her out, go to baby classes, swimming, or just enjoy normal outings. Right now, our lives are on hold, but we are focused on making sure Aria is safe, happy, and ready for a bright future.” Despite the challenges, the couple remain determined to give their daughter the best chance at life and normal childhood experiences.

Aria Kean’s story is a testament to parental love, courage, and the resilience of a child facing overwhelming health challenges. From jaundice as a newborn to complex heart surgery and the wait for a life-saving liver transplant, she has endured more than most children will in a lifetime. Her smiling face, bravery, and the dedication of her parents serve as an inspiration and a reminder of the fragility and preciousness of life. The family continues to hope for a liver transplant soon, ready to embrace the moment that will allow Aria to truly thrive.
