In a scene that left everyone in tears, a gentle giraffe leaned over to give a tender, last kiss to the man who had cared for him for years.
Mario, 54, a devoted zoo worker battling terminal cancer, had one final wish: to see his beloved animals one last time. With the help of the Ambulance Wish Foundation, his hospital bed was wheeled straight into the giraffe enclosure at Rotterdam’s Diergaarde Blijdorp Zoo.
As the giraffe approached, it seemed to recognize his suffering, offering a touching gesture that left witnesses choked with emotion. “These animals recognized him,” said Kees Veldboer, founder of the charity that made the dream come true.
The moment didn’t stop there. Mario also said goodbye to colleagues and the other animals he spent decades with, creating a farewell filled with love, tears, and unforgettable memories.
This isn’t the first time the charity has granted such heartfelt wishes. Last year, they reunited a terminally-ill 86-year-old man with his beloved ponies at his farm in Oss, Holland.
