There are some stories that are too extraordinary to put into words, and Kohen’s story is one of those. After 199 days of hospital stays, surgeries, and intense medical care, Kohen is finally going home—just in time for Christmas. His journey has been one of unimaginable challenges, heartache, and triumph, and through it all, Kohen has become a true hero in the eyes of his family and medical team.

Born at 37 weeks, Kohen’s arrival in the world was anything but smooth. From the very beginning, doctors knew that Kohen would face unique challenges. He was born missing his corpus callosum, the part of the brain that connects the two hemispheres, a condition that affects many of the brain’s functions. It was a hard pill to swallow for his parents, Brooke and her husband, but they refused to let this diagnosis define their son. Little did they know, the obstacles they were about to face would test their strength in ways they had never imagined.

Just three days after Kohen was born, his health took a sudden turn for the worse. He developed necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a severe and life-threatening condition that affects the intestines of newborns. This added another layer of worry and fear for Kohen’s family, who were already navigating the difficulties of his initial diagnosis. But this was only the beginning. Kohen’s battle would require him to undergo seven stomach surgeries, surgeries that would leave him living without 85% of his small bowel.
Despite all of this, Kohen kept fighting. His resilience was nothing short of incredible. His family watched in awe as he endured countless procedures and medical setbacks, each time coming out stronger than before. But Kohen’s health was far from stable. He also struggled with an obstructing tongue, which affected his airway and led to the need for a tracheostomy.
Along with this, Kohen required a GJ tube for feeding and a central line for his treatments. It was a complex and challenging medical situation, but Kohen’s doctors and nurses were always by his side, providing the care he needed to survive.

Through all of these challenges, Kohen’s strength shone through. His family describes him as their hero—a fighter who never gave up, even when the odds seemed stacked against him. “He is our family’s hero and fighter,” shares Brooke, Kohen’s mom, with a mixture of pride and emotion. “The doctors and nurses here have become our family, and Kohen knows them all as his aunts and uncles.”
The bond between Kohen and the medical team at GCH (Children’s Hospital) is one of love, trust, and deep connection. The hospital staff didn’t just treat Kohen’s medical needs—they became a second family to him. They celebrated every milestone, no matter how small, and stood by Kohen’s family through the darkest times. The doctors, nurses, and child life specialists at GCH didn’t just save Kohen’s life—they became a source of emotional and physical support, helping him fight through some of the toughest moments of his young life.
Kohen’s journey has been long and filled with obstacles, but the strength of his family and the unwavering support of his medical team have brought him to this moment—a moment of hope, healing, and love. Kohen’s story is one of perseverance. Each day he fought, his family fought alongside him, supporting him every step of the way. They never lost faith in his ability to pull through, even when it seemed like the road ahead would be impossible.

When the day came for Kohen to leave the hospital, it felt like a miracle. After 199 days of fighting, Kohen was finally going home. His family could hardly believe it. They had endured so much, and yet, here they were, able to take their son home just in time for Christmas. For Brooke and her family, it was the best gift they could ever ask for. Their Christmas miracle had arrived, and it was more precious than they could have ever imagined.
“Words can’t describe the overwhelming emotions we feel as we leave the hospital with Kohen,” says Brooke. “We are forever grateful to the entire medical team at GCH for all they have done for him. Kohen is alive because of them, and we will never be able to thank them enough for their dedication, love, and care.”
Now that Kohen is home, his family is focused on what lies ahead. While the road to recovery will be long and filled with challenges, they are filled with gratitude and hope. Kohen is a fighter, and they know that with the love of his family and the care of his doctors, he will continue to grow stronger every day.

They are in the process of weaning him off the ventilator, a huge step in his recovery, and something that his doctors initially thought might take 5 to 10 years. But with Kohen’s determination and the ongoing support of his family and medical team, they are confident that anything is possible.
As the holiday season arrives, Kohen’s family is filled with joy and gratitude. They know that their son’s fight is far from over, but they are celebrating every victory—big or small. This Christmas is extra special, as it marks the first time Kohen will be home with his family after spending 20 months in five different hospitals. They are cherishing every moment, knowing just how precious this time together is.
