Fishermen have caught a large fish (megamouth shark) off the coast of Japan. This is the 58th animal found so far in the world.

This widemouth shark was caught in the net of Japanese fishermen last month. It was later put on display at the Marine Science Museum in Shizuoka City. This is a female fish with a weight of nearly 1.5 tons and a length of 4 m. The Japan Daily Press reported that yesterday, May 8, scientists at the museum performed an autopsy on this animal’s body.

The widemouth shark is known as the “alien shark” because of its peculiar head. This is considered one of the rarest fish in the world, has only been discovered in some seas such as California, Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Brazil, Ecuador, Senegal, South Africa, Mexico and Australia… According to the Florida Museum of Natural History, broadmouth sharks commonly inhabit the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic oceans.

This species of shark, like whale sharks and basking sharks, is widely distributed. However, it is a less active species and less capable of swimming than the other two species. During the day, it is in deep water, only at night it emerges near the surface to hunt. Their food is mainly plankton and mollusks.

Since it was first discovered in 1976, only 58 widemouth sharks have been found so far. In 2009, fishermen in Sorsogon province, Philippines accidentally caught a wide-mouthed shark, but they later butchered it and ate it.
