More than 1,000 people, including hundreds of fellow police officers from adjacent states, attended a funeral in rural Kentucky late last week to pay their respects for Jason Ellis, a 33-year-old K-9 officer killed in what Authorities believe it was a snag Fido, Ellis’s police dog, was also there, putting his paw on the closed coffin, a moment captured in devastating image by photographer Jonathan Palmer.

Fido was not with Ellis on May 25 when he was shot several times while picking up debris on a freeway exit ramp in Bardstown, Ky., a tight-knit community of about 12,000 located 40 miles southeast of Louisille. Ellis’s murder remains unsolved.

Dozens of fellow K-9 officers attended the funeral and, according to the Herald Leader, their canines could be heard howling from their patrol cars:

Hundreds of officers snapped to attention as the honor guard was called; the approximately 60 police dogs at the ceremony barked to the sound of the 21-gun fire from the guards. .

“I’m your boss, Jason, but you’re our hero and you must saƄer that this boss won’t back down,” McCuƄƄin added. Jason, my friend, rest easy. We have it from here. “Ellis is surpassed by his wife, Aмy, and two children, Hunter, 7, and Parker, 6. He paid the ultimate sacrifice by doing what he loves, being a police officer,” McCuƄƄin added..
