Weird But Adorable: Cute ‘Mouse Deer’ Explores The World For The First Time

 

 

 

Java Mouse Deer and mother/Caters

This tiny Java Mouse Deer was born just a few weeks ago at a zoo in the Netherlands.

And the bizarre looking creature – currently the size of a hamster – looked unsteady on its feet as it explored its new habitat for the first time.

 

The Natura Artis Magistra – a zoo in the centre of Amsterdam – has become the new home for the tiny species.

New pictures show just how small these animals are – even at maturity they only reach the size of a rabbit, making them one of the smallest hoofed mammals on earth.

Java Mouse Deer/Caters

As the Mouse Deer followed its mother around their enclosure, it displayed its extremely fragile legs and delicate features.

This baby will only grow to a maximum weight of about five lbs (2.5 kg) in adulthood, and its legs will be no bigger than the circumference of a pencil.

Primarily herbivores, Mouse Deer are timid and solitary, with their natural habitat the island of Java, Indonesia where they get their name.
