Laekyn Hardy, a 4-and-a-half-year-old girl from Fulton, Missouri, is teaching us all about strength, resilience, and the power of hope. Her journey, marked by immense challenges and an unwavering spirit, serves as a reminder of the courage that children with cancer possess. Laekyn’s story is one of both heartache and hope, and it’s a story that continues to inspire those around her.

It all began in September of the previous year when Laekyn, usually a vibrant and active child, suddenly became lethargic and pale. Her parents, Michael and Jordan Roberts, immediately took notice of her change in behavior and decided to seek medical attention. “We started our drive to MU Children’s Hospital in Columbia, but Laekyn was struggling, so we stopped at Children’s Mercy Hospital,” Jordan recalls. What followed was a whirlwind of events that no parent ever expects to face.
Laekyn was diagnosed with pneumonia and sepsis. Her blood counts were dangerously low, and she required transfusions. Jordan remembers the terrifying moment when they almost lost Laekyn, saying, “We almost lost her.” After 11 days in the hospital, Laekyn was able to go home, but Jordan’s gut told her something wasn’t quite right.
By December, Laekyn’s condition worsened. As an autistic, non-verbal child, she had difficulty expressing what she was feeling. Her mother’s intuition, however, led them to MU Women’s and Children’s Hospital, where they would receive life-altering news. On December 18th, 2024, doctors diagnosed Laekyn with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. It was a devastating diagnosis for the Hardy family, but their journey was just beginning.
The very next day, Laekyn began treatment, marking the start of over two years of chemotherapy and follow-ups. Chemotherapy is a grueling and often overwhelming treatment process, but Laekyn’s strength has never wavered. As Jordan explains, “Laekyn is happy and full of life. She loves the outdoors, swimming, animals, music, dancing, and Dora the Explorer.” Despite the hardships she faces, Laekyn’s joy for life shines through.
One year after Laekyn’s diagnosis, her progress is nothing short of remarkable. Jordan shares with me that Laekyn is doing well, taking a chemotherapy pill every day, and undergoing checkups every three months. “She’s doing so well,” Jordan says with pride, “and we are hopeful for the future.” The family has been given incredible news: once Laekyn completes her treatment, she will only have a 3 percent chance of relapse.
This positive outlook is a source of hope not just for Laekyn’s family, but for all families affected by cancer. “Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia is very serious,” Jordan acknowledges, but she wants to share the good news: “We want people to know there are positive outcomes for children with cancer. There is hope.” Her message is one of optimism, emphasizing that despite the challenges, there is always a chance for recovery, and there is always hope for a brighter future.
Laekyn’s story isn’t just about the fight against cancer—it’s about the triumph of the human spirit, especially the spirit of children who are facing unimaginable obstacles. Laekyn has shown all of us that even in the darkest moments, there is light, there is strength, and there is hope.
As we continue to support children like Laekyn, who are fighting their battles with courage, we are reminded of the importance of community and love. Laekyn’s progress, the good news of her treatment, and the strength she continues to demonstrate serve as a powerful example of what is possible when hope and resilience collide.
The journey is not over, but with each passing day, Laekyn is proving that she is a warrior. Her story, and the love and support surrounding her, remind us all to keep fighting, to keep believing, and to keep hoping.
Let’s continue to support Laekyn and all the brave children like her. Their strength, resilience, and hope inspire us every day.
