Jacob was a vibrant, fun-loving, and strong-willed 11-year-old who loved life. Diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a type of brain tumour, in 2021, Jacob’s journey was a heartbreaking battle that left a lasting impact on everyone he met. His parents, Dani and Damion, share their emotional story of hope, determination, and the devastating reality of losing their son…

The First Signs: A Sudden Change

It all started with what seemed like typical childhood illnesses—headaches, cold-like symptoms, and vomiting. Jacob was an active young boy, a motocross enthusiast with a passion for life. However, as the symptoms persisted, something didn’t feel right.
“I knew something was wrong,” says Dani. “He started complaining of headaches and wasn’t himself. He’d fallen behind in his usual activities, and I just had a bad feeling.”
By the time Jacob was diagnosed in January 2021, his condition had worsened. Despite multiple visits to the doctor, it was not immediately clear what was causing his symptoms.
The Diagnosis: A Life-Altering Moment

After a series of tests and scans, Jacob was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a cancerous brain tumour. His parents were devastated by the news, but the diagnosis wasn’t the only shock they received. The tumour had already spread to Jacob’s spine, making the prognosis even more uncertain.
“The word ‘cancer’ hit us like a ton of bricks,” recalls Damion. “We were terrified. How could this happen to our child, the boy who loved to live life to the fullest?”
Jacob’s battle began immediately with emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain and spine. Over the next few months, his family watched him undergo painful treatments and endure the side effects of chemotherapy.
The Journey: Treatments and Setbacks

Jacob’s treatment was intense, starting with multiple rounds of chemotherapy. But it wasn’t long before the family learned that Jacob’s cancer was more aggressive than they had hoped. After completing a round of chemotherapy, scans revealed that the tumour had not responded as expected, and Jacob’s doctors decided to try proton therapy.
“After the proton therapy, we were hopeful,” says Dani. “But soon after, we got more devastating news. The cancer had spread further, and our treatment options were dwindling.”
Jacob continued to fight, his parents never leaving his side, as he endured five rounds of chemotherapy. His strength and determination to keep going despite the pain amazed everyone.
“We kept telling Jacob that we were with him every step of the way. He was our little warrior, and even when things seemed impossible, he never gave up,” says Damion.
A Glimmer of Hope: The High Dose Chemotherapy

After several rounds of chemotherapy and proton therapy, Jacob’s doctors recommended high-dose chemotherapy followed by a stem cell transplant. The procedure was risky, but it was one of the last options available. After much deliberation, Jacob’s parents agreed to go ahead.
The chemotherapy took a heavy toll on Jacob’s body, but he showed incredible resilience. He endured the painful side effects, including extreme nausea and fatigue, but he kept fighting. At times, it seemed like there was no end to the suffering, but Jacob’s bravery continued to inspire those around him.
The Struggle: The Return of Cancer

Despite the aggressive treatments, Jacob’s cancer continued to return. By the end of 2021, it had spread further, and the family was told that there were no more options for curative treatment. The doctors explained that Jacob’s tumour had become resistant to the treatments, and it had spread too far for further surgeries.
The heartbreak of hearing this news was unimaginable for Dani and Damion. They fought with every ounce of their being to save their son, but they were faced with the reality that time was running out.
“It was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to hear,” says Dani. “To be told that there was nothing more they could do—it felt like the world had ended.”
Palliative Care: A Last Chance for Comfort

After the devastating news, the family decided to transition to palliative care, making Jacob as comfortable as possible in his final days. They chose to move him to a children’s hospice, where he could be surrounded by family and friends, creating lasting memories in the time they had left.
“We wanted Jacob to be surrounded by love and comfort, not in a hospital with more treatments,” says Damion. “He deserved to be at peace.”
Jacob’s family spent the remaining time cherishing every moment they had with him. They celebrated his courage and strength, even as they prepared to say goodbye.
Jacob’s Final Moments: A Legacy of Love

On 12 October 2022, just two weeks after his 12th birthday, Jacob passed away. He was surrounded by his loving family, having fought bravely to the end. His final moments were peaceful, with his family by his side.
“Jacob was a light in our lives. Even in his final days, he showed us what it means to fight with everything you have,” says Dani, holding back tears. “He lived life with love, joy, and strength, and that’s how we will remember him.”
Honoring Jacob’s Memory: The Legacy Lives On

Though their hearts are heavy with grief, Jacob’s parents are determined to honor his memory by raising awareness about childhood cancer and supporting research to help other children like Jacob.
“We want Jacob’s legacy to live on,” says Damion. “Even though we lost him, we know that his spirit is still with us. His strength, his laughter, and his love will never be forgotten.”
