It started with a slight limp. One afternoon, as I went to pick Jack up from school, I noticed it immediately. I brushed it off at first, assuming he had hurt himself during playtime. However, the limp didn’t go away, and after a week, it seemed to persist. He wasn’t complaining of pain, and his energy seemed unaffected, but I couldn’t ignore the change. So, I took him to our GP.
The doctor reassured me that it was likely a virus causing some irritation in Jack’s hip. It didn’t seem like something to worry about—just a mild ailment that would pass. But a few days later, Jack became ill with a fever, and I began to feel a nagging worry that something more serious might be going on. Another trip to the GP followed, and this time, we were told it could either be an infection or a virus. I was told to give him Calpol and wait it out.
But as the days passed, Jack’s condition worsened. His pain became more intense, and he started crying at night, unable to sleep from the discomfort. That’s when we made the decision to go to A&E. After some tests and an X-ray, the doctors told us everything looked normal. They reassured me once again, advising us to continue with pain relief.

That night, Jack’s screams echoed through our home. In the early hours of the morning, at 5 am, I couldn’t wait any longer. I called 111 and was advised to take him back to A&E for further tests. The results came back with a surprising finding: his C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were alarmingly high. That was enough to send us to Bristol Children’s Hospital, where we began to face the true uncertainty of Jack’s condition.
At the hospital, the doctors suspected a septic hip, even though Jack’s X-rays and hip ultrasound showed no obvious signs of infection. But the next day, the situation took a different turn. An abdominal ultrasound revealed a mass above his right kidney, something none of us had expected.
It felt as though time stood still. As Jack underwent test after test, our worst fears began to materialize. Days turned into weeks, each filled with anxious waiting, medical procedures, and the constant question of “What if?” On February 15, 2024, we received the devastating news: Jack had stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer that would change our lives forever.
The diagnosis shattered us. No parent is ever prepared for the words “your child has cancer,” but the fight had only just begun. Jack’s journey was just beginning, and we had no choice but to fight with everything we had. He began his treatment with eight rounds of induction chemotherapy, followed by a stem cell harvest and tumor resection surgery. The road ahead was long and filled with uncertainty.

Through it all, Jack’s strength and resilience have been nothing short of remarkable. Despite the pain, the exhaustion, and the fear, he never once gave up. He completed high-dose chemotherapy, stem cell transplant, 12 sessions of radiotherapy, and six months of immunotherapy. His ability to bounce back from the darkest moments, to smile through the hardest days, has been a constant source of inspiration for our entire family.
But even as we celebrated every small victory, the shadow of relapse loomed over us. The fear never fully left. Every time Jack mentioned a tummy ache or complained of sore legs, I couldn’t help but fear the worst. But Jack has proven time and time again that his spirit is unbreakable.
In April 2025, Jack finished his treatment. The months of grueling therapy were behind us, and he entered remission. Today, Jack is a vibrant, curious seven-year-old who is back in school full-time. His journey is far from over, as he will continue maintenance treatment for the next two years to help prevent a relapse. But for now, we hold on to the joy of seeing him thrive once again.
We couldn’t be prouder of Jack. His journey has been a testament to the power of love, resilience, and the unwavering strength of the human spirit. Though the road ahead still holds uncertainties, we are filled with hope and gratitude for every step forward. Jack’s bravery has shown us that no matter how dark the moment, there is always light on the other side.

Jack’s story is not just a story of survival—it is a story of family, love, and the incredible capacity we have to endure. It’s a reminder that even in our darkest hours, there is hope.
We celebrate Jack every day. He’s come so far, and we know that he will continue to inspire us and those around him. Because of him, we now believe in miracles.
