The proposed treatment was demanding. Zuzia would first undergo six months of stretching in a specialized device to prepare her skin and spine for surgery. Time, however, was not on their side. Every passing day worsened the spinal deformity, making the operation more dangerous. Dr. Feldman warned her parents to prepare for every eventuality, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
This new chapter of their fight required enormous sacrifices. The family would have to relocate temporarily, leave jobs behind, and gather an almost unimaginable sum of money to cover the costs.
