Steven Gerrard believes Dominik Szoboszlai can reach world-class status after Liverpool’s victory over Marseille.
Dominik Szoboszlai’s stunning free-kick gave Liverpool the lead against Marseille in the penultimate match of the 2025/26 Champions League qualifying round. An own goal from Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli and a stoppage-time strike from Cody Gakpo secured a 3-0 victory for Liverpool, lifting them to fourth place in the Champions League standings.
Anfield legend Steven Gerrard singled out Szoboszlai for praise after Liverpool’s impressive win, and insisted the Hungarian international can reach another level if he can control his ego.

Szoboszlai has shown fairly consistent form for Liverpool since joining from RB Leipzig for £60 million in 2023, making over 100 appearances for the Reds and contributing to Arne Slot’s side winning the Premier League title last season.
However, the 25-year-old had endured a frustrating few weeks before the Marseille victory, gifting Barnsley a goal in Liverpool’s FA Cup win and then missing a penalty in the draw against struggling Burnley. Gerrard, one of Liverpool’s greatest players of all time, said on TNT Sports:
“If he stays humble, continues to work hard and does things the right way, he can reach another level. He needs to constantly crave development, growth, and improvement, because at any age, if you always want to improve, you can always get better.
I think he has the talent, and I think he has the right people around him to help him continue to develop and become an even better midfielder. I think he has the potential to reach world-class level. I think he’s shown that in some games this season, and this is the most consistent form I’ve seen from him.
I really enjoy watching him play, full of energy, and he works very hard off the ball. It would be a shame if he didn’t push himself to reach new heights. I think he absolutely can.”
