Last week, staff members at a school in Southern California spotted a small black-and-tan dog roaming the school’s property. Although she was sweet, her presence immediately alarmed the employees — especially when she returned the next day.
First, the workers had no idea where the hungry dog was coming from. And since her body suggested that she’d just had puppies, they worried about her every time she ran back into the neighborhood after eating.
“[She] would come and go, but we never knew where she disappeared to,” Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy 29, wrote on Facebook.

Hall’s friend, Lori, worked at the school and made sure to feed the dog whenever she stopped by. But after a few failed attempts at capturing her, Lori called Hall for additional support.
The dedicated rescuer arrived at the school as quickly as she could, even though the dog they called Mama was nowhere to be found. Then, Hall spotted a lead.
“I saw another dog going in and out of a duplex,” Hall wrote. “Something told me to follow, and when I stepped inside, I couldn’t believe my eyes.”

Hall was shocked to find Mama inside the duplex, taking shelter at a family’s door. When Hall asked the family if Mama was theirs, she received devastating news.
“‘No,’ they said. ‘She’s a street dog. She just had her puppies under the house,’” Hall wrote.
The rescuer’s heart sank. Suddenly, her plan to trap a helpless dog turned into a mission to find a litter of days-old babies beneath a house.

It didn’t take long for Hall and Lori to find Mama’s six babies in the crawlspace under the house, but they were far out of reach — and the only opening they could see was too small for either rescuer to fit. Then, they met Jeremy.
“We met the most wonderful young man, Jeremy, who absolutely saved the day. He got down on the ground and crawled way, way under the house … [and] all he had was a mop,” Hall wrote. “Thank God Lori had gone back to the school to grab it.”

Without skipping a beat, Jeremy grabbed the mop and wriggled through the foundation’s hatch door. He then used the mop’s handle to nudge each puppy toward him.
“One by one, those tiny little miracles slid forward, whimpering softly, and we pulled them to safety,” Hall wrote.

Hall, Lori, and Jeremy were thrilled to have all the puppies safe in their arms, but there was still one more dog to rescue: a now panicked Mama.
“She was terrified, skittish, frantic,” Hall wrote. “The moment she realized her puppies were no longer under the house, she started searching everywhere, desperate to find them.”

It took hours for Mama to calm down, but she eventually walked into Hall’s dog trap. And she couldn’t wait to reunite with her babies.
“As soon as I reunited Mama with her puppies, oh my goodness,” Hall wrote. “They latched onto her immediately, tails wiggling, tiny cries turning into the sweetest little sighs. Mama relaxed for the first time, and the whole little family melted into each other.”

Mama and her babies were overjoyed to be together again, and they refused to leave each other’s side as they were discharged from Hall’s partner veterinary clinic to their foster home.

The little family is currently still in foster care, where they are growing stronger each day. They still have a few weeks to go before they’re ready for adoption, but Mama and her babies are in no rush to separate.

They’re just grateful to be together, thanks to the dedicated humans who refused to leave them beneath a house.
“[They’re] a miracle family rescued just in time,” Hall wrote.
