“She is honestly the happiest girl on the planet,” Hannah says. “She lights up every room she’s in.”

Layla’s story began like so many others. She was born full-term on January 29, 2015, a moment Hannah remembers with overwhelming happiness. There were no immediate alarms, no dramatic complications. For a brief time, life felt normal.

But within months, Hannah noticed something subtle yet deeply unsettling. Layla wasn’t rolling over. She wasn’t sitting up. She wasn’t smiling the way other babies did. While friends and family tried to reassure her—and even questioned whether she was worrying too much—Hannah’s instincts wouldn’t quiet.

“I just knew something wasn’t right,” she recalls. “Even when people told me I was imagining it.”

As months turned into years, Layla continued to miss milestones. She couldn’t sit up on her own until she was nearly a year old. She built very little muscle and couldn’t walk. “All you want as a parent is to see your child happy and making progress,” she says. “Not knowing why that wasn’t happening was heartbreaking.”

Determined to find answers, Hannah began driving for hours across Florida, taking Layla to genetic testing centers every few months. Blood tests. Waiting lists. More unanswered questions. It wasn’t until late 2018—after more than a year of relentless searching—that the family finally received a diagnosis.

Doctors identified an NFIX gene mutation, a rare genetic condition associated with severe developmental and intellectual delays, epilepsy, skeletal abnormalities, vision impairment, and overgrowth. The news was devastating—but at least it was something. A name. An explanation.

Then came another shock.

Further testing revealed a second condition: a BPTF gene mutation, linked to breathing problems, heart complications, and an increased risk of childhood cancer. Geneticists told Hannah they believed Layla was the only person in the world with both mutations.

“They couldn’t tell us what to expect,” Hannah says quietly. “They couldn’t even tell us her life expectancy.”

The diagnosis was a bittersweet relief. After years of searching, they finally had answers—but those answers came with terrifying uncertainty. Life became a series of unknowns, punctuated by fear.

In 2019, Layla’s health took a frightening turn. She began vomiting frequently. Her skin turned pale and yellow. At times, she became non-responsive. Her blood sugar crashed to dangerously low levels—numbers doctors described as potentially fatal. Hospital visits became routine. Doctors struggled to understand why it was happening.

Layla’s weight dropped dramatically, from an already-low 35 pounds to just 23. Hannah remembers sitting beside her hospital bed, watching her daughter grow thinner, weaker, and more fragile by the day.

“I was terrified every time we went to the hospital,” she says. “I didn’t know if we were going to bring her home.”

Out of fear, Hannah now sleeps beside Layla every night. Once, Layla choked in her sleep—a moment that left a permanent mark on her mother’s heart.

Despite everything, Layla’s spirit never faded.

She cannot speak. She cannot eat independently. She requires constant, 24-hour supervision and still wears nappies. Yet joy seems to come naturally to her. She laughs easily. She beams at strangers. She radiates a happiness that feels almost defiant in the face of everything she’s endured.

“She doesn’t focus on what she can’t do,” Hannah says. “She just lives.”

When Layla learned to walk on her own last year, it was celebrated like a miracle. Small victories—using her hands more confidently, approaching a new toy without fear—are treated as milestones worth cheering.

“We celebrate everything,” Hannah says. “Every little step matters.”

Layla now attends a special needs school, something Hannah once feared might never happen. She loves it. The structure, the therapy, the social interaction—it has given her a new sense of joy and belonging.

“She absolutely thrives there,” Hannah says. “School has brought out even more of her personality.”

Doctors believe Layla may never speak, but to her family, she communicates constantly—through smiles, laughter, and the unmistakable way she connects with people.

Hannah doesn’t deny the fear that still lingers. Living with a child whose future is uncertain means learning to hold hope and anxiety at the same time. But she refuses to let fear dominate their lives.

“We don’t know what the future holds,” she says. “So we take it day by day. We make memories. We love hard.”

Layla’s life is not measured in milestones society expects. It is measured in moments—moments of happiness, connection, and resilience. In a world that often defines worth by achievement and independence, Layla’s existence challenges those ideas entirely.

“She’s taught us what really matters,” Hannah says. “Joy doesn’t come from certainty. It comes from love.”
