For Natalie and her husband, the excitement of expecting their first child was quickly overshadowed by a devastating diagnosis. Their daughter, Sienna, was born with a congenital heart defect known as Complete Atrioventricular Septal Defect (CAVSD), a condition that would require multiple surgeries and ongoing medical care. But through it all, Sienna’s strength and resilience have been nothing short of extraordinary, and her journey has been a testament to the power of love, support, and determination.

The Diagnosis: A Life-Altering Moment
Natalie’s pregnancy began like many others—exciting and filled with anticipation. The 12-week scan showed everything was progressing well, and they were thrilled to see their baby growing. But when they went for their 20-week scan, things took an unexpected turn. While everything appeared fine at first, the sonographer couldn’t get all the measurements she needed. A week later, Natalie and her husband returned, hoping for more answers.
The news that followed would change their lives forever. “I’m sorry, but your daughter has a heart problem,” the doctor told them. “We were blindsided,” Natalie recalls. “I never expected to hear those words. We had no idea what was ahead, but I knew something was terribly wrong.”
Just five days later, Natalie and her husband were back at the hospital for a fetal echocardiogram. The diagnosis was clear: Sienna had Complete Atrioventricular Septal Defect (CAVSD), a congenital heart defect where the heart’s valves and chambers are not properly formed. The doctors explained that there was also a 50% chance Sienna could have Down syndrome. The possibility of additional challenges was overwhelming, but Natalie and her husband vowed to love their daughter no matter what.
“We knew that we would love her just as much whether she had Down syndrome or not,” Natalie says. “But we needed to know for sure, so we opted for an amniocentesis. It was a difficult decision, but the doctor was amazing and made the process as easy as possible.”
The results came back the next day, and to their relief, Sienna did not have Down syndrome. But the path ahead remained uncertain.
A Challenging Pregnancy
As the pregnancy progressed, Natalie attended regular fetal medicine appointments to monitor Sienna’s growth. But soon, Natalie faced another challenge—gestational diabetes. “The constant hospital appointments were exhausting. My husband was working 12-hour night shifts, and the stress of everything weighed heavily on us,” Natalie recalls.
At 38 weeks, doctors made the decision to induce Natalie early, though the consultant reassured them that there was only a 1% chance Sienna would need surgery after birth. Even so, the consultant wanted to be cautious and decided to have the birth take place at St. Michael’s Hospital in Bristol, a facility with the specialized care Sienna would need.

Sienna was born without the need for immediate surgery, and the family breathed a sigh of relief. However, their journey was far from over. Sienna was transferred to Cardiff, where they began the long and challenging battle of managing her heart condition and ensuring she could thrive.
The Struggle to Thrive
In the months that followed, Sienna faced many hurdles. She struggled to gain weight and was unable to breastfeed effectively. She was tube-fed for the first two years of her life, and her reflux made feeding even more difficult. “She was constantly sick and had a low immune system due to her heart problem,” Natalie explains. “She was frequently getting chest infections, which only added to the stress and worry.”

Despite these challenges, Sienna’s spirit shone through. Her parents never gave up, and they continued to support her through every setback. “Every day was a new challenge, but every little victory felt like the biggest blessing,” Natalie says.
At just before her second birthday, Sienna’s medical team decided it was time for her to have open-heart surgery. “It was the longest seven hours of our lives,” Natalie recalls. “Waiting for the call was agonizing. We were terrified, but we knew this was her best chance for a healthier future.”
A Brave Recovery
Sienna’s surgery was a success, and her recovery began. “Our little girl was so strong. After surgery, she was trying to sit up while still having a drain in. They had to sedate her because she was so determined to get moving,” Natalie remembers. “She was a fighter, even when she was so tiny and fragile.”
Sienna spent five days in Bristol Children’s Hospital, where the medical team provided exceptional care. Natalie is quick to express her gratitude. “We are so thankful to the staff at Bristol Children’s Hospital for everything they did for Sienna. Their care and support were beyond anything we could have hoped for.”
A Thriving Heart Warrior
Today, Sienna is four years old and thriving. She is full of energy, smiles, and laughter, and her family is overjoyed to see her doing so well. “She is doing amazing, and we are so proud of how far she’s come,” Natalie says. “She’s our little heart warrior, and her strength has inspired us every day.”
Sienna’s road to recovery is ongoing, and she continues to have regular check-ups to ensure her heart remains healthy. But for now, the family is filled with gratitude. “We’re so lucky to have Sienna here with us,” Natalie reflects. “She’s a miracle. Every day is a gift, and we don’t take a single moment for granted.”
The Importance of Early Diagnosis
Sienna’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of early diagnosis and the life-saving interventions that can follow. “Without knowing about Sienna’s heart condition early on, we wouldn’t have had the chance to prepare for her care,” Natalie says. “Being able to plan and make the right decisions helped us give Sienna the best chance at a healthy life.”
Sienna’s journey also highlights the incredible importance of support networks for families navigating complex medical journeys. “We’re so grateful for the resources we had, like Tiny Tickers, and the amazing medical teams who have been with us every step of the way,” Natalie adds.
A Legacy of Strength and Hope
Sienna’s journey is far from over, but her story serves as a beacon of hope for other families facing similar challenges. Her strength, resilience, and the love of her family continue to guide her through every stage of life. “Sienna is our hero,” Natalie says. “She’s shown us what true strength is. And we know her story will continue to inspire others who are fighting their own battles.”
