Liverpool are waiting to discover the full extent of Jeremy Jacquet’s latest injury after the defender was ruled out of France’s Nations League meeting with Belgium. The setback has immediately raised concerns over his availability for Liverpool’s huge Premier League clash with Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.
Jacquet had made an impressive start to life at Liverpool since completing his move from Rennes. The 21-year-old has featured in all seven of Liverpool’s matches this season, with six of those appearances coming as a starter alongside captain Virgil van Dijk. His consistency had quickly made him an important part of Andoni Iraola’s defensive plans.

The concern emerged while Jacquet was away with the French national team. After making his first two senior international appearances, the young centre-back was expected to feature again against Belgium. Instead, he was left out of the squad because of what has been described as a strain to his left hamstring.
France head coach Zinedine Zidane described the problem as a slight injury, offering some hope that it may not be a long-term issue. However, Liverpool still need their own medical assessment before determining exactly how serious the problem is and whether Jacquet has any chance of recovering in time for Sunday.
The timing could hardly be more frustrating for Liverpool. Manchester City are scheduled to visit Anfield on October 11, with the two sides meeting in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the next Premier League round.
For Iraola, losing Jacquet would create another difficult selection problem in defense. The Frenchman has developed a strong partnership with Van Dijk, and replacing a player who has started so regularly could force the Liverpool manager to make adjustments to his back four.

Joe Gomez could become one of the options if Jacquet is unavailable, although the exact solution will depend on the latest medical information and the players available to Iraola. Liverpool are already dealing with other fitness concerns, including Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak, making the international break particularly challenging for the Reds.
Jacquet’s injury is also an unfortunate development given how quickly he has established himself following his summer arrival. Liverpool officially completed his signing from Rennes on July 1, with the defender joining on a long-term contract after previously suffering a serious shoulder injury earlier in 2026.
That previous injury had already delayed his preseason involvement, making his subsequent progress even more encouraging. He eventually became a regular under Iraola and has shown why Liverpool invested heavily in his potential.
Now, though, the club must wait.
Further assessment in Merseyside should provide a clearer picture of Jacquet’s condition and his chances of facing Manchester City. Until those tests are completed, Liverpool supporters can only hope the injury is minor and that their young defender will be back in contention.
With a massive match approaching at Anfield, every fitness update matters. And for Liverpool, the next medical report on Jeremy Jacquet could have a significant impact on Iraola’s defensive plans for Sunday.
