Baker is a remarkable little boy who will be three years old at the end of February. At just five weeks old, Baker was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF), a genetic condition that affects the lungs, digestive system, and other organs. His early life was immediately marked by medical complications, including a life-threatening incident at
seven weeks old, when he silently aspirated and required CPR from his father, Jon. Thankfully, Baker survived this frightening ordeal and began the long journey of managing CF, a condition that demands constant care and vigilance.
Baker also falls under cardiology care, as the vessels around his heart are positioned abnormally. While this could have posed additional risks, it has not affected him significantly, allowing Baker to focus on living his life with joy and energy. Like many children with CF, he also requires a
feeding tube due to past aspirations, which has been a critical tool in supporting his growth and nutrition during his early years.
One of the turning points in Baker’s care came shortly after he
turned two, when he started Kaftrio, a breakthrough CF medication. The effects have been transformative. Baker is thriving, showing strength, vitality, and the boundless energy typical of toddlers, even in the face of a chronic condition. While he is not yet talking, his family believes this is related to
developmental trauma from extensive hospital stays during his first year of life. Despite this, Baker’s personality shines brightly—he is joyful, curious, and full of life.
Baker has a love for simple joys that remind everyone around him of the beauty of childhood. He is obsessed with Sesame Street, adores cars, and loves exploring new books. His curiosity and playful nature bring light to his family every day, providing moments of laughter and connection that are just as important as his medical care.
His journey also includes ongoing medical appointments to monitor his health. In January, Baker has several important check-ups planned: a speech and language evaluation, a cardiology appointment, and a CT scan and bronchoscopy under general anesthesia. These appointments are crucial for assessing his progress and determining whether he can safely transition away from his feeding tube. If successful, his family will face the task of teaching him to eat orally, essentially starting the process as they would with a baby, a challenge they are ready to meet with love and patience.
In addition to medications and hospital care, Baker has recently received a High-Frequency Chest Wall Oscillation (HFCWO) vest, a treatment more commonly available in the U.S. but not standard in the U.K. This vest mechanically performs chest physiotherapy by vibrating at high frequency to loosen and thin mucus in the lungs—a vital part of CF care. Baker tolerated the vest well during his first session, managing 15 minutes without discomfort or frustration, demonstrating his bravery and adaptability. His CF care team worked tirelessly to provide this life-enhancing tool, reflecting the dedication and innovation required to support children with rare conditions.
Baker’s story underscores the importance of awareness and support for cystic fibrosis. Many people are unfamiliar with the challenges faced by children with CF, from daily medications and therapies to hospital visits and specialized equipment. Baker’s family advocates for better understanding and resources, emphasizing that even small interventions, like access to a chest physiotherapy vest, can have a profound impact on quality of life.
