Russian photographer Andrey Gudkov captured the brutal moments of a fierce prey battle among Komodo dragons on Rinca Island, Indonesia. These images vividly depict the raw power and savagery of these giant reptiles in the wild.
In these remarkable photos, one Komodo dragon is seen trying to escape with a piece of deer carcass in its mouth. However, other members of the group are not willing to let go of the tasty morsel so easily. Driven by intense hunger, they become aggressive, ready to fight their own kind for a share of the meal.
The battle intensifies as the dragon holding the deer meat desperately tries to keep it to itself. Under immense pressure from other predators, it is eventually forced to surrender part of its catch. Today, there are only about 3,000 to 5,000 Komodo dragons left, living on the islands of Komodo, Gila Motang, Rinca, and Flores in Indonesia. Their numbers are rapidly declining due to illegal hunting and shrinking habitats. With lengths of up to 3 meters and weighing up to 136 kilograms, Komodo dragons are the heaviest lizards on Earth, closely related to dinosaurs, having roamed the Earth for 3.8 million years.
