Though Paisley was a tiny newborn, barely over 5 pounds, she had a complex heart condition that would require immediate and ongoing medical attention. Paisley’s early days were defined by hospital stays and medical procedures. At just three days old, after an initial assessment, her doctors noticed that she wasn’t thriving as expected. She was quickly diagnosed with an AV canal defect, a congenital heart defect where the walls between the heart’s chambers are not fully formed, leaving the blood to mix between the heart’s chambers, making it harder for the heart to pump blood properly. In addition to her heart condition, Paisley was also born with Down syndrome, which added another layer of complexity to her condition. Her parents were overwhelmed by the enormity of it all, but they also knew that their dauger had already shown them a glimmer of hope just by making it into the world.
With the support of her dedicated medical team, Paisley underwent six surgeries in her first year of life, three of them being open-heart surgeries. The first, performed when she was just a few months old, was the most crucial. Her team performed a colostomy placement and a G-tube insertion to help her eat and digest properly, as well as a failed attempt to repair her hiatal hernia. The complexity of Paisley’s condition meant that she was often faced with procedures that required immediate action, and each one felt like a test of her willpower.
The family’s life revolved around Paisley’s medical needs. Every day was filled with doctor visits, blood draws, X-rays, echocardiograms, and constant monitoring of her condition. With each procedure, Paisley had to endure the discomfort of being poked, prodded, and hooked up to medical equipment, yet despite it all, she never stopped fighting. Her smile, small and fragile at first, became a beacon of hope for her parents. Her medical team recommended that she undergo her second open-heart surgery, the Glenn procedure, which would help improve blood flow to her lungs and heart. Her parents, though terrified at the thought of another major surgery, knew it was a necessary step in ensuring that Paisley could continue to grow stronger.
On June 3rd, Paisley underwent the Glenn procedure. This time, the surgery was much smoother, and Paisley’s recovery was swift. She was out of the hospital in just two weeks, much faster than anyone had expected. This was a huge milestone for Paisley and her family. After months of struggle, Paisley was finally starting to thrive. She could breathe better, her heart was working more efficiently, and, most importantly, she was beginning to smile even more, bringing light into her parents’ lives.
Paisley’s development, though still behind in some areas, began to pick up. She was enrolled in physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), and other developmental programs to help her catch up on the milestones she had missed. She worked hard with her therapists and made significant progress. Every day was filled with tiny victories—smiling more, laughing more, and even learning to sit up and roll over.
One of the most significant milestones in Paisley’s journey came in December when her G-tube was removed. This was a symbol of her strength and progress. She was now able to eat and drink on her own, something that had once seemed impossible. Her family couldn’t have been prouder of her achievements, and they celebrated the momentous occasion with love and joy.
Despite the challenges that still lay ahead, Paisley’s family is focused on the positive.
